The District Manager, West of the Nigeria Railway Corporation ( NRC) Mrs. Angelique Ikwuka on Tuesday said four staff of the Corporation, are now in police net for allegedly stealing rail equipment in Oni-Iyarin-Owodotun area of Ogun State.
Mrs Ikwuka disclosed this while speaking with newsmen on the Federal Government’s commitment to deliver the ongoing train service for Nigerians before the end of the year.
The District Manager stressed that the vandalization of railway properties happened few days ago in Abeokuta adding that some vigilant youths who were disturbed by similar theft of the railway equipment in the community, had been keeping vigil to prevent another incident.
She pointed out that “the culprits were actually apprehended by youths of Oni-Iyarin-Owodotun community. Unfortunately, some of our staff were part of the culprits.” and that investigation was still ongoing to nab the fifth suspect, said to be a welder, who is currently at large.
Lauding the efforts of the youths in the area for being proactive in alerting the police for the arrest of the suspects, who were caught in the act, the NRC District Manager called on other communities within the railway corridors to report any of such cases or even apprehend anyone seen vandalising railway properties.
The District Manager maintained that the culprits and those indulging them within the system would be dealt with, in accordance with the law, to serve as deterrent to others who may be harbouring such intention.
