Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Thursday said its Hongmeng operating system will be for industrial use and not for smartphones.

The company said it intends to continue using Android for its smartphones.

Huawei’s vice president Catherine Chen said in Brussels that the rumours that Hongmeng will be used on smartphones were untrue.

Chen’s statement was in contrast with what Richard Yu, who heads Huawei’s consumer business unit told US channel CNBC.

He, however, said that Huawei was still committed to Android.

“Today, Huawei, we are still committed to Microsoft Windows and Google Android,” Yu said. “But if we cannot use that, Huawei will prepare the plan B to use our own OS.”

Huawei was dealt a blow this week with Google’s decision to partially cut off Huawei devices from its Android OS following a US order banning the sale or transfer of American technology to the firm.
