The Speaker, Kaduna State House of Assembly, Alhaji Aminu Shagali has on Monday July 22, 2019 called for capital punishment for rapists, kidnapers, armed robbers and other forms of violence, especially against women.
Shagali said this when the Federation of Women Lawyers paid him a courtesy call in his office in Kaduna, stressing that the above mentioned offences must not be over looked by any authority.
“Hence the need to give them capital punishment especially that of rape, kidnapping, armed robbery and violence against women,” the Speaker added.
Also speaking, the President of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Kaduna chapter, Mrs. Zainab Atoba said the primary object of her group is to protect, preserve and promote the rights of women and children.
According to her, with the passage of the Child Welfare and Protection Law of Kaduna State, the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, the Penal Code Law and the ACJ Law in Kaduna State, it shows how the government is serious to do away with violence, especially domestic.
“it is worthy to believe that the government of the state is ready to address the challenges facing the most vulnerable group in the state,
“The challenges cannot be over emphasized as they stem from cases of violence against women and children, sexual assault against children and women, battery, rape, defilement, trafficking, forced labour, forced marriage, abuse and host of others which we receive on daily basis,” she noted.
She further added that FIDA is hopeful that if given the mandate and collaboration to sensitize and educate the women and children in the remote areas of Kaduna state on the efficacy and applicability of these laws which can be achieved by translating some of the laws into the local language,Hausa, they will have a better understanding on how to handle such violence.
She however called on Kaduna State Government to change the punishment of rape and defilement from 14 years imprisonment to death by hanging.
Meanwhile, the Political adviser to Governor Nasir el-Rufai, Mr Ben Kure has also paid a courtesy visit to the speaker to create a proper collaboration with the Assembly which has been in existence.
He said his office will create more ideas for a robust political environment for the state.
According to him, the office of the governor is a place for everyone to come along and work harmoniously regardless of your party as opposition which is the beauty of democracy,
While responding, the Speaker urged the political adviser to work with the opposition as they are now part of the government.
Noting that the state government is now looking forward to move the state forward and not campaigning for another election as such, they should work hard to ensure that this administration succeeds.
Also Dr. Aminu Usman, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Kaduna State University who was also on a courtesy visit to the Kaduna Assembly said the aim of their visit was to invite the Speaker to their annual international conference.
Usman said, “the Theme of the year’s conference is the working relationship between the legislative and the executive arm of government”
According to him, the conference will generate debate among other academicians to go in to research in order to bring out more imperative on the relationship between the two arms of government.
The Speaker said the Assembly was able to achieve all the successes it is enjoying now due to the immense contribution of the past administration.
Adding that without your support and contribution, we will not be where we are today.
