WHAT IS THE EFL TROPHY FORMAT?
The draw will be made in July for regional groups, with the top two in each pool qualifying for the knockout stages – which begin in early September. Each group will contain an ‘invited’ club.
United, as one of these teams, will be away from home in the group games, with three points awarded for a win and none for a defeat. If there is a draw, the teams get a point apiece but a penalty shoot-out allows the successful side to earn an additional point.
From the round of 32 onwards, one-off ties are used to determine which team progresses. The northern and southern winners then meet at Wembley in the final.
The cup was lifted by Portsmouth this year after they beat fellow League One side Sunderland on penalties in front of a record crowd of 85,021.
