It was a bitter pill to swallow for Lingard but, undeterred, he glided through the Dutch defence in stoppage time, only to guide his bending shot the wrong side of the far post.
However, the Netherlands went ahead in extra-time when John Stones was dispossessed by ex-Red Memphis Depay and, although Jordan Pickford saved, Promes’s rebound went in off Walker as the pair slid in together to meet the loose ball. More sloppy defending, this time by Barkley, gifted Memphis the ball in the England box and he squared for Promes to power in the clincher.
Ronald Koeman’s side go through to the final on Sunday, with England facing Switzerland in the third/fourth-place play-off earlier the same day.
It remains to be seen if Rashford will be fit enough to play.
