Residents of Lagos are currently living on the brink and indeed that has actually been the norm in the city especially for those that live in areas medium and low-income owners where the rule of touts, popularly known as area boys hold sway.
Residents of those areas are usually the first to bear the brunt of any infraction on their way of life. Peoples who live in Mushin, Oshodi and the likes are quite aware of how damaging these group of boys are. Many of them are a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The boys are the foot soldiers of the Union leaders and they are used in a quarrel among the top members or as tools to protest government policies they felt were unfair.
Therefore, it should be understood when members of the public quiver in fear when they learnt that a former chairman of the NURTW has been sentenced to death by hanging. Saheed Arogundade, the chairman of the Ayetoro Unit and an associate of the Notorious MC Oluomo was found guilty of two count’s Murder and conspiracy to commit Murder Gbenga Oladipo, a police officer.
Delivering his judgement, Justice Olabisi Akinlade of an Ikeja High Court, Lagos, said: “The prosecution has been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt the ingredients of conspiracy and murder against the first defendant, therefore, I pronounce that the first defendant is guilty as charged.
“I hereby pronounce sentence of the court upon you, Saheed Arogundade, that you will be hanged in the neck until you’re dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”
One of the key witnesses against the NURTW boss, one Lukman, a commercial motorcyclist, narrates the events that led to the death of the police officer.
“The deceased called me to give him a ride to his mother’s house when four men approached us and dragged the deceased down from my motorcycle.
“One of them, Arogundade brought out a knife and stabbed him at the back. I ran off to go seek help from other fellow riders but when I returned, the other three men were hitting the deceased with their fist.
“I could see the faces of the other men clearly because I recognised Arogundade who stabbed him. When I got close to the deceased, I realised he has been badly stabbed all over his body and was bleeding severely.
“He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead. The hospital security officers later took me and his corpse to the police station and filed a report. The deceased body was carried in an ambulance to Ajeromi police Station,” Lukman said.
Still on the matter of NURTW, recently, the national treasurer of the body, MC Oluomo recently returned to the country after he was stabbed by during the campaign of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), though he survived the attack, he later went abroad for further treatment.
Speaking after his arrival, MC Oluomo narrated his ordeal and gave thanks to God for sparing his life.
“I want to give thanks to God for saving my life, because only I, knew what hit me at that moment. , Immediately it happened, I felt light and I started feeling thirsty, just like someone who had been shot and losing blood. I knew if I had taken any liquid at that time, I would have died.
“But what came to my mind was the 7-7 water I got from Mecca. I have seen and experience how Alfas make use of the Holy water and how it works.
“While I was being rushed to the hospital, all I could do was to request that my people try as much as possible to get me the 7-7 water.
“I took the water and became a bit alive after some days. Some other Islamic rites were also carried out immediately and the Imams, Pastors, and Traditionalists rose up to the occasion. It was the third day, that I regained consciousness and felt life within me,” Oluomo said.
