The Federal Government will continue to fight the war against drugs trafficking and consumption to its logical conclusion for the betterment of the country, Chairman and Chief Executive of National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Colonel Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (rtd) has disclosed.
In a keynote address he delivered at the official commissioning of the agency’s rehabilitation center built and donated by Katsina State Government and closing ceremony for Counseled 30 Female Clients at the headquarters of the agency in Katsina Metropolis, Colonel Mustapha Abdallah described drugs abuse in the country as ”unacceptable” and implored all and sundry to join in fighting this patriotic war for development and progress of the nation.
Colonel Abdallah emphasized that, the establishment of the NDLEA by decree 48 of 1989, Nigeria has joined the rest of the World in getting rid of this conker worm within her borders.
He charged parents and guardians to watch their children and wards closely to avoid falling victims of drugs menace.
In her welcome address, the NDLEA Commander in Katsina State, Hajiya Maryam Gambo Sani said in the year 2018, the Command seized 452,414 Kilograms of Cannabis Sativa,10,746 tablets of osychotropics substance and 26,099 bottles of cough syrup with codeine.
Hajiya Maryam Sani said during the period, 818 suspects were arrested, 104 suspects convicted to various jail terms and counselled 714 drug users.
According to her, from January this year to date, Katsina State Command of the NDLEA has seized 66,116 Kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, 15,696 tablets of psychotropics substances and 38 bottles of cough syrups with codeine.
Consequently, she said 182 suspects comprising 20 students, 49 females, and 113 males were arrested out of which 46 suspects convicted and they counseled 131 drug users.
The rehabilitation center has capacity to train clients in skills acquisition such as soap making, knitting, tailoring, computers and handsets repairs within the period of three months.
Hajiya Maryam Gambo Sani commended the mutual respect and understanding between the Command and Katsina State Government under Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari.
Also speaking, wife of the Katsina State Governor, Hajiya Hadiza Aminu Bello Masari condemned the activities of drug traffickers in view of their negative consequences of destroying the future of youth in the society.
